Juan Gris is a Spanish painter born in Madrid who lived and worked in France most of his life. Closely connected to the innovative artistic genre Cubism, his works are among the movement's most distinctive. Gris challenged the traditional rendering of space and volume in painting. "Cubism is moving around an object to seize several successive appearances. Which fused in a single image, reconstitute it in time," the artist once explained.
